AI-MATTERS Progress Update HY1 2026: Driving AI Innovation in European Manufacturing

Share:

Since our last update, the AI-MATTERS project has made substantial progress in strengthening Europe’s capacity for AI and robotics adoption within the manufacturing sector.

As a Testing and Experimentation Facility (TEF), our objective is to provide European small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and technology providers with accessible, high-quality services that facilitate the testing, validation, and implementation of advanced AI technologies in real-world industrial settings.

Our work contributes to building a more resilient, flexible, and competitive manufacturing ecosystem across Europe.

Key Developments in 2026

Since the start of the year, the AI-MATTERS consortium has delivered several notable outcomes:

  • Frequently Asked Questions: a dedicated page for frequently asked questions has been created where you can find many answers already.
  • Service Delivery to SMEs: we have continued the provision of services to SMEs across Europe, aligned with their specific technological challenges and innovation goals. In 2026 alone, over XXX European SMEs have tested and experimented with AI applications in manufacturing.
  • User Stories: we have published over XXX user stories in 2026, demonstrating the tangible outcomes of service delivery and showcasing successful applications of AI in manufacturing.
  • Expansion of the Service Portfolio: in response to evolving market demands, the AI-MATTERS service offer continues to grow. New competencies and infrastructures have been developed to ensure relevance and impact.
  • Website Redesign for Improved Usability: the official AI-MATTERS website has been further optimized to enhance user experience, simplify navigation, and facilitate direct access to services and project contacts.se the look and feel of the portal but also to improve usability, accessibility, and engagement; especially for SMEs who may be less familiar with EU-funded innovation programmes.

Current Status (as of July 2026)

  • 121 services completed by June 2026
  • 100+ contracts signed across multiple countries in 2026
  • Several cross-border cases
Contracts per country per July 2nd, 2026 (node, %)

An increasing share of services delivered directly to SMEs (80% of all contracts) and technology providers find the right AI solutions – faster, more intuitively, and in their own language.
